New Doors Open for Celebrity Chef

Celebrity chef Simon Gault has exacting standards.
“I tell chefs I’m looking for an extra five per cent magic, and that’s what the Fletcher Aluminium product achieves,” he says.
The executive chef of Euro and co-owner of several other top New Zealand restaurants is building his dream home with wife Katrina. They’ve used Pacific Suite joinery designed by Fletcher Aluminium throughout and say they’ve achieved a handsome, sleek and unique Karaka home.
“The doors are so easy to slide; you just wouldn’t want to build a house now without putting in a Pacific Suite Eurostacker, in my opinion,” Simon says.
The Gaults’ contemporary, single-level, 330sqm home calls for an abundance of glass. They were after modern and sturdy joinery, but they also got innovation.
When Fletcher Aluminium told Simon about corner Eurostackers, which effectively open up an entire corner of a room without the need for a structural post, the design changed immediately.
“We changed the design so we could have that feature because it’s so cool.”
The Eurostackers have now become a key feature of the open-plan kitchen, dining and living area. They open to create an entry of about 5 metres and the room flows to a covered outdoor area with a barbecue, pizza oven and open fire.
Simon says it was Fletcher Aluminium’s collaborative approach which inspired the use of the Eurostackers, and similar discussions also led to the installation of two strikingly huge windows which create an internal glass atrium off
the hallway.
Says Katrina: “The two big windows – they are so impressive. It’s a lot better than we ever thought or ever dreamed of.”
One of the property’s three bathrooms will feature a bath set under a bifold window, with a view of the Gaults' small private lake. “I can just see myself lying in the bath with a glass of Champagne and the window wide open,” Katrina says.
The nine-month build is on track and Simon says Fletcher Aluminium’s window and door specialists worked seamlessly with the builder to deliver the joinery on time. “The service and delivery have been perfect, spot on.”
And the chef’s corner? Simon and Australasia’s top kitchen designer Mal Corboy have created a spacious 18sqm kitchen, fitted with De Dietrich kitchen equipment, a Sub-Zero fridge, modern cabinetry and a scullery reminiscent of an Italian deli.
The kitchen will surely set the scene for some legendary gastronomic events, but Katrina suspects the first meal in the home will be a simple pizza on the patio, Eurostacker doors flung open, the lights of Auckland illuminating the sky.
